We spread love and care for
farm-animals through our causes

Farm Animal Rescue

The Little Red Barn is home to a variety of farm animals including cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, goats and cats.  Each one of our residents has a unique story which made them part of the Little Red Barn family.  Some of our residents were saved from slaughter, or factory farms, while others were abandoned, or brought to our sanctuary knowing they would be provided a lifelong safe home free of exploitation.  Some animals require specialized care requiring intensive veterinary support.

We also work with other Farm Animal Sanctuaries as needed to assist with transportation and fostering of animals in desperate need until permanent placement is ready.

Providing Forever Homes

At The Little Red Barn, we provide resident focused care to all our animals. Each of our residents is treated as an individual with personalized care plans to meet each of their unique needs, including nutrition, veterinary care, gentle handling techniques, enriched relationships, specialized bedding and living environment.  Our goal is to provide as rich a life as possible in a loving, safe home.  Sadly, many of our residents come into our care near the end of their lives, with significant medical issues brought about from a lifetime of exploitation.  We give each one of these special individuals all the love and care they so deserve.  When the time comes, they will be given a dignified, humane passing over the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by a family that loves them.

Teaching Compassion and
Empathy Through Education

As children, we are all born hard wired to be compassionate, especially to animals, while empathy needs to be practiced.  At The Little Red Barn, we believe in teaching compassion and empathy towards farm animals, each other and the environment for a kinder world.  Our program is based on the research that personal interaction can influence individual’s beliefs and values towards farm animals, their diets and the environment.  Our education programs include Personalized Compassionate Tours, Community Building with Schools, research, and additional resources.

Exclusive Private Compassion Tour

Living in a city, most children and their families have a complete disconnect from the food they eat and the farm animals it is derived from. There is also little thought to sustainable food production such as gardening, instead of purchasing fruits and vegetables from a store. There is an overall disconnect to nature, animals and the environment. At our sanctuary, children and their families can make connections with farm animals, connect with nature and learn about sustainable food production in their own back yards. They learn that animals are someone not something, and they are living sentient beings. In the past year, our sanctuary has connected with over 1500 friends and families. Through our residents and their sometimes-heartbreaking stories, they help educate visitors about farm animal compassion and how to be empathetic.

Community Building With Schools

Our virtual programs are aimed at schools for children to learn compassion and kindness towards farm animals, each other, themselves and the environment and can be individually developed with participating teachers to meet curriculum requirements.

Currently, we are working with the Toronto School Division, the largest school division in Canada to develop a virtual learning partnership for children to learn kindness to farm animals, the environment and each other.  We are also conducting research with support from the University of Winnipeg Psychology department with regards to farm animal interactions and how personal interactions with farm animals can change individual’s beliefs and values towards farm animals and their food.  The Little Red Barn has also been selected to be a speaker at the Humane Canada Virtual Conference April, 2021 with the topic “Bridging the Disconnect Between Farm Animals and Children.”
